Global Business for Peace Event Takes Off in Istanbul

Lara Toensmann, advisor to UN Global Compact Banking & Finance working group and team member at S360 was present at the first inaugural Business for Peace Annual Event in Istanbul on Monday 29th September. Lara was the lead discussant for the roundtable discussion “How the financial and investment sectors can advance peace"
Drawing on over a decade of experience working with the private sector to explore the role of business in contributing to peace, the UN Global Compact launched Business for Peace at the Global Compact Leaders Summit (September 2013). Identified in Forbes as one of the five areas defining the future of CSR - and already with over 100 signatories from 33 countries - this leadership platform assists companies in implementing responsible business practices that are aligned with the Global Compact principles in conflict-affected and high-risk areas. The platform also catalyzes collaborative practical action to advance peace by leveraging business influence on the workplace, marketplace and local communities.

This event hosted in Istanbul was an occasion for companies, business associations, GC Local Networks, NGOs, governments, academics, and UN partners to come together to focus on bringing forward the unique insights needed to move the private sector’s contribution to peace towards transformational impact. This meeting has helped to create a truly global community of practice to share best and emerging practices and lessons learned – with an emphasis on moving beyond anecdotal examples to systemic solutions. Several resources were shared including several great resource ”Guidance on Responsible Business in Conlict-affected and high-risk areas“ or ”Managing in Complex environments: questions for leaders“

It was also an opportunity for inspiring greater action by companies, civil society organizations, UN representatives, Global Compact Local Networks and other stakeholders.

One of the first steps a company can take to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability is to become a signatory of the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact. Members of this network are also now able to leverage their impact by focusing on some of the key thematic issues of our times. The Local Network in Turkey has focused its efforts on three thematic areas including:

Caring for Climate
Business for Peace
Women’s Empowerment Principles
